Art Social April 8 with Charlevoix Creatives Collective (C3)!
Calling creative Charlevoix residents age 16 and up who enjoy pursuing creative endeavors in all mediums.
Bring your creative ideas, dreams, tools you use, projects in the works or you’d like to finish. Join six artists exhibiting their work at the Circle of Arts Charlevoix for a fun afternoon of sharing and creating. We will meet in the Circle of Arts lower level from 3 to 5 pm Saturday, April 8, 109 Clinton St., Charlevoix.
The artists/creators represent a variety of art mediums and unique perspectives including illustration, painting, fiber arts, photography, graphic design, fused glass, stained glass, writing and book publishing.
The work of each artist is being showcased at the Circle of Arts March 10 through April 8, along with the tools they use to create, learn individually and collaborate together. They hope to inspire others to create and dream, from small efforts to growing and expanding as artists, creators, writers, beyond.
About C3:
The Charlevoix Creatives Collective (C3) is an amalgamation of artists coming together to cultivate creativity, ideas and inspiration. They collaborate to support, design, and promote each other’s artistry. The Charlevoix artists include: Ruby Smith, Kathie Libert, Sharon Smithem, Jennifer Carroll, Mary Duggan and Shayla Johnson.

HANDMADE PASTA II

April is a time of renewal and anticipation for good things to ‘Spring’ forth. It’s time to elevate basic pasta-making and learn how to incorporate added flavors. If you have tried to participate in the earlier introductory classes, you are still welcome in this class.
For those who have tasted the fruits of your earlier kitchen labor and are eager for more, I am branching out into Pasta II. If you are a repeat student, be prepared to make your dough uncoached, and learn how to add ingredients for extra flair. Also, I will cover a couple of sauce techniques, and we will discuss drying and longer-term storage. A yummy dish will be shared using the pasta made in class. As always, please bring an open mind and an apron, and a beverage if you choose.

In this course, we will cover topics such as how to best use the camera you have, shooting modes, settings, the exposure triangle, the rule of thirds and composition, editing your photos, and more. In 2 short hours you will be able to learn many of the key basics, and dramatically increase the quality of your photography!

Have you ever wanted learn the ancient art of Ikebana Japanese flower arrangement? Join Dolly Smith and Patti Bishop, members of Ikebana International Organization of Traverse City!
Dolly & Patty will demonstrate and assist you in making a beautiful Ikebana arrangement using specific pottery vessels by local artist June Otis.
April & May workshops will focus on 2 variations of Ikebana called Ikenobo Shoka Sanshuike and Ikenobo Free Style, as well as skill building.
Each workshop will result in a new take-home arrangement.
You can attend either class or both!
Includes all materials, flowers and Otis Pottery floral arranging vessel.
Students will need to bring: Floral clippers & pruning shears and a low box to take your arrangement home in.
**If taking both workshops, you will only need to buy one container to use for both workshops.

SUNFLOWER DOOR HANGING

Join us in making a sunflower door hanging. Each person will create a sunflower out of canvas duck cloth, painted with chalk paint and stuffed with fiber fil for a 3 dimensional look. Add chunky wood beads if you'd like to the hanger. Perfect for adding color to your home for spring!

Create 2-3 beautiful 8 x 10 watercolor botanicals. This class will include an introduction to graphite transfer, watercolor paints and a specific wet in wet technique. Julie will walk you through each step with demonstrations and individual coaching.
Most supplies are included, except paint brushes.
Students will need to bring their own #12 round watercolor brush and #2 liner brush.

Explore the incredible beauty of Alcohol Inks, an intensely vivid and fluid medium that practically paints itself! In this class, participants paint a delicate watery group of flowers, a large bursting bloom and a field of daisies. We start my mixing and blending , then adding metallics to 4 pieces of art paper using bold and beautiful alcohol inks. Each participant will get to use these to create 3 distinct pieces of jewelry to take home.

Artist and teacher Megan Swoyer returns for her fifth workshop here with area participants. Watercolorists of all levels are invited to join Megan in this fun and relaxing class that features loose-style painting. Hydrangea, sunflowers, daisies, and more make up this gorgeous arrangement. Megan goes step by step and demonstrates each step. A variety of techniques will be used including wet-into-wet and wet-into-dry.
No experience necessary, this class is for beginners to experienced.
Students must bring their own supplies, or purchase a kit directly from Megan.
Supplies Needed:

Watercolor paints: including a favorite blue, Cerulean blue, a bright yellow, orange, brown, ocher, pink, sap green.
-
Optional: A white crayon or white taper candle, table salt, a few toothpicks.
-
Watercolor paper: at least 8 x 10 in size and no larger than around 9 x 12.
-
Brushes: preferably round brushes (not flat) that are for watercolor painting, in sizes from small like a 0 or 1 to a 6 or 8.
-
2B regular pencil. Eraser that’s not your pencil eraser.

It’s also nice to have a board that’s perhaps a cardboard siding or box siding, cut a little bigger than paper.

Painter’s Tape (like the blue tape wall painters use) to tape your paper down to your board. Or, if your paper is in block you won’t need to tape it.

Join artist Julie Tibus and learn to paint a wild and gorgeous birds nest 11 x 14 inch water. This class will include and introduction to watercolor paints. Our painting begins with India Ink and a spray bottle. Next we drip beautiful colors and watch the magic happen with a wet in wet technique. Details are then added to finish the painting. Great for beginners to experienced!

IMPROVISATION ON CANVAS

“Improvisation On Canvas” Clinic, also known as painting to Jazz Music!
The focus will be on the freedom of expression in the abstract, using texture and colors to guide them. We will utilize several jazz artists of the Be Bop era… IE, Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, Dizzy, Miles, etc…
Students will paint totally from intuition.
Students are given specific guidelines, such as putting to canvas, what they are hearing.. IE.. Visual Interpretations of Audio recordings by the Jazz Greats.
Students are encouraged to “Hear” in color and “Listen” for shape inspiration.
Modern Abstractions and also realistic works are both acceptable, however, this is a great learning tool for thinking outside the box and on the spur of the moment. Students will be asked to have no preconceived ideas before they start applying their medium to canvas.
Supplies Needed:
Students can choose their medium! Acrylic paint, Pastel’s and Watercolor are recommended. Experienced painters may paint with oils.

Your Choice: Pastels, watercolors or acrylic paints in a variety of colors.

Paper or Canvases: Pastel paper or watercolor paper. For paints you will need canvases in assorted sizes… 10×10, 9×12 to large scale… square and/or rectangle.

Palette Knives.

Foam brushes (from the hardware store) in assorted sizes.

Table top easel if needed.

CANCELLATION POLICY
Weather-Related
In the event that Charlevoix Public Schools are closed due to inclement weather, classes will be cancelled. To the best of our ability, CCA will schedule a make-up class. Refunds will not be provided if the student is unable to attend a rescheduled class.
Minimum Enrollment
If a class does not have the minimum number of students enrolled, CCA will notify you prior to the first session that the class is cancelled and will offer a full refund to the student. (Credit card payments will be refunded to the same card and check & cash payments will be refunded by check.)
Student Withdrawal
Due to artist/instructor preparations and travel, we do not provide refunds.
